What does Part P Mean for Electricians?

Part three of our miniseries looking at Part P details what Part P means for working Electricians.

Part P for electricians who complete work in dwellings is important and electricians have two options for compliance with the regulations.

   1. They can register with one of the many competent person schemes available. This         enables them to become registered as competent and able to complete electrical work in dwellings under self certification of their own work.

This means that a certificate can be issued that certifies any work competed is in compliance with the Building Regulations.

The group that the electrician is registered with will notify the Building ControMultifunction Meterl body and issue a compliance certificate to the consumer.

2. If the electrician is not registered with one of the competent person schemes they will have to notify the local Building Control body before work is carried out. This means submitting a building notice or full plans.

The building control body sends an electrician who is registered as competent to inspect and test work. On completion, the un-registered electrician will have to pay a fee.

Both options depend on individual circumstances. Electricians should choose the option which best suits their own needs, but should always remember to ensure they are in compliance of PART P regulations.
